How does the program work?

Volunteers contact the community directly or they arrive in the country through the coordination of other organizations who then contact us.

se contactan con la comunidad directamente o llegan al país bajo la coordinación de organizaciones extranjeras o nacionales quienes trabajan con nosotros.

Accommodation in the homes of families in the community.

The families that form our community organization all have experience inviting volunteers into their homes.  Volunteers have their independent bedroom and receive their meals with the family, generally the food is locally produced and will probably consist of lots of different tubers, vegetables, grains, cheese, milk and not so much meat.  In our experience this type of accommodation allows volunteers to really integrate with the family and the community and leads to a more enriching cultural exchange, we recommend the homestay option and a positive attitude from volunteers especially for the first couple of days until they adapt.  The homestay option works in rotation with the different families to make sure everyone receives the same benefits.

When volunteers stay for longer than 2 weeks, they generally work from Monday to Friday in their assigned tasks and have the weekend free, if they wish they can stay in the community or travel to different destinations, in this case they should notify their coordinator here in the community.

According to your interests and abilities, the needs of the community and conversations with you, every volunteer is given a schedule of activities.  Your schedule might include the following:

  • Environmental education: we need volunteers to support our environmental education program with the children in the community.
  • Research: you can also support research into orchids, bromelias or medicinal plants for example or in any other environmental service.
  • Agro ecology: you can participate in activities like sowing vegetables, weeding, digging, harvesting, preparing seed beds or anything related to vegetable gardening and you will also acquire practical knowledge.
  • Community farm “Tahuallullo”: your support with construction work and the maintenance of paths, instalations, camping area, and recreational area are all key.  These activities will be coordinated by and accompanied by a member of the tourism team.  Or you might be able to participate directly with a group of tourists.
  • Family farms: You might have the opportunity to participate in agricultural or forestry activities (reforestation), normally this will be with your host family.
  • Participation in community work “MINGAS”: a minga is when the community comes together to do some kind of work that benefits everyone.  Mingas are a great opportunity to work and socialize with the whole community.
  • Making cheese, yogurt or jam in our small factories.
  • Sometimes volunteers have the opportunity to attend or participate in sporting events or parties.

Volunteers should bring:

Insect repellent
Warm, comfortable clothes, we recommend long sleeves for outdoors work
Rubber boots
Sunhat or cap
Waterproof jacket or poncho
